I'm having a problem getting CurFX to complete the installation (or re-installation I should say). Initially I was hasty-a bit excited to take a look at the new toys, and didn't think about uninstalling CursorXP. The install seemed to work on that first try, but as it turns out CursorXP was still installed. I looked at the CursorXP config and the 'disable all' box was checked, which made sense, but when I clicked to open the CursorFX config panel, it never showed up onscreen, (although I did see it eating an enormous amount of RAM-topping out at 96M before I killed it in task manager). At that point I uninstalled it (note: references have been made that it supposedly shows up in SDCentral, I have yet to see it in there), and since then the installer chokes at a point where it's looking for a \Themes folder. I get to an "error: Could not access network location\Themes" and have to exit. It appears to me be maybe looking for the old CursorXP themes - I re-installed CurXP and uninstalled, and those files are still there. Any ideas? I'm running XP SP2, a fairly new installation, no previous issues with CurXP..
Thanks..

Kromiumsun if I were you I'd contact support WWW Link

and reference this thread so you don't have to start all over again.

What you've tried to do makes sense to me, but it sounds like it's a bit tangled up and I'd just have them sort it out. 'Course, now that I've said that, someone else will come along here and know exactly how to get it untangled    and that'd be alright too.

If anyone gets an answer to this issue, I have got it now too- the can't find network themes ..thingo, please post it eh?

It all started when I created a new cursor, saved it and tried to load it, since then everything's gone nutty.

This Error struck me too. The difference: I uninstalled CursorXP BEFORE installing CursorFX and i deleted the Program-Folders, Shortcuts etc.

What i have to mention is that i'm running on a German-Language-System and everyone knows the trouble with different names for system-folders. F.E.: I got 2 different locations for english and german Software ("Programme" and "Program Files"). Some Programs just don't work because they fail to find the folders with german names. (Another Example is "Shared Documents" and "Gemeinsame Dokumente"!)

I installed Cursor FX Plus after uninstalling Cursor XP Plus and everything went well
on my first PC, but when I tried to install it on my second PC I received the same error message that you guys are getting. I currently have an active ticket with support. There is a new build available for download, but it did not solve the problem.
It is a new program with some obvious bugs. We will just have to wait for a solution.

Curiosity got the best of me and opted for a second go-round with reinstalling CursorXP, then installing CursorFX alongside, after which it made it past the error; this must be a built-in thing where it looks for and imports all of your CurXPThemes (which it did after about 5-10 minutes of disk activity). When it was done the CursorFX ControlPanel opened, and I was able to successfully change my cursor. Checking the CursorXP control panel reveals the 'disable all' box to be checked, so's to prevent any conflicts. I did however have great difficulty in using the application and my observations are such: there is an approximate 5 minute delay to open the CursorFX Control Panel with RAM usage monitored in TaskManager climbing from 45-50M to about 100-110M before the panel opens - geez. I tested and timed numerous times with the same result...
This may not so much be a software issue, as the PC I tested it on which is not one of my main PC's, but rather an older Toshiba laptop with 704M RAM and a 2.8Ghz Celeron. I used that as my personal litmus test that if it could run smoothly on that old thing, I'd switch over, but (as I'm sometimes reluctant to 'test' out things on my main PC's), it implies to me that there's the possibility that CursorFX is a bit needy in the way of resources which I can't justify for a cursor so it's back to CursorXP. I'm unashamedly a fanboy of the folks at Stardock and appreciate the effort that goes into things that they release to us for free. And their support has always taken care of me (not to mention the community). I'm sure it'll all get worked out.

Kromiumsun-

I saw CursorFX's ControlPanel's load time visibly increase as I added cursor themes in chunks of say 20 or so at a time. It's not like there is a magic point, but the number of themes clearly affects the load time.

I've seen this mentioned in another post somewhere (I don't feel like fishing it out right now), and I believe Stardock is aware of the load speed and has figured out a way to fix it, and intends to do so pretty quickly, like really pretty quickly. I know I'm being a little vague, but I just don't remember the details.

Anyway, until that happens, if you have a lot of themes loaded I think you'll see better speed on that if you move some extras off to another storage directory for awhile to get the "active" count down to say 50 or so, or less if you want. An ya I agree, the Toshiba might be running a little thin on memory and doing a lot of swapping.

Glad you got it sorted out though.

Y'know Dave,
thanks for mentioning that - it crossed my mind as I was writing and I somehow forgot to add the caveat that my themes directory pushes well over a hundred, maybe I'll try thinning out the herd down to the ones I actually use until they get it patched. I'll bet that's the crux of the biscuit here.
Thanks

Could not access network location\Themes :Workaround
Install Stardock Central.
In the menu {on the left} select Misc
Then select CursorFX click install.

Yeah, as far as all that goes - SDCentral is what I'm using (as stated at the beginning of the post), and CursorFX ain't there. I went to the extent of looking in the Show/hide applications menu and CursorFX Plus is checked to display and all I see under Misc is CursorXP free. I don't really see where I should have to run around in circles to get the thing to show up, and if they don't want me to be able to see it in SDCentral, I suppose I ain't gonna see it and that's that..I see posts from other folks having the same issues, so when they get it all together maybe I'll look into it again and give it a go.

I struck same problem re "could not access network ..." etc. Chain of events as follows:
Was running CursorXP Plus. Uninstalled. Installed CursorFX (free version). Uninstalled CursorFX (free version). Installed CursorFX (non-free). ERROR as described. Reinstalled CursorXP Plus. Installed CursorFX (non-free). NO ERROR. Uninstalled CursorXP Plus. CursorFX still working fine.

Hope this helps get around problem ....

Can't complain. I DID buy CursorFX as an UPGRADE to CursorXP and I'm notorious for not reading any docs ... Cheers

Thanks for the tip,
I've tried Cursor FX on 3 different PC's and had problems every time - most recently last week I installed it on my brand-spanking new Quad-core Xeon workstation and it seemed to be OK until I closed the dialog box after changing the cursor right after the installation completed - I get 'CursorFx has had an error and will have to close' (approximate wording, I don't remember precisely) message. After clicking OK, the windows cursor is completely gone and I'm left fishing around with an invisible cursor trying to re-start Cursor FX so I can get the cursor back and uninstall the damn thing pardon my French. It's a cute user interface and a great idea but I never had this many problems with CursorXP, and I've archived the CursorXPFree installer for future builds.
